Ken Jowett: first Veterans. Champion

Ken Jowett, Yorkshireman and former Viking Cycles professional, has died aged 74, after a long illness. Jowett, who became an inspiration to many riders, began racing at the age of 17 in the late 1940s when British road racing was in its infancy. He joined the Bradford Elite, then the Racing Club, and at 19 turned professional and joined Ken Russell and leading British roadman Geoff Clark in the ITP Pools team. In 1950 he won the Tour of the Peak, his first big home win. Then in 1952 he was a member of the British team which rode Warsaw-Berlin-Prague. Ian Steel won, Jowett was sixth, and Britain won the team prize.
He won the Peak again in 1953 and went on to ride five Tours of Britain, Paris - Lens (4th), the Belgian Tour of the Six Provinces, and the Tour of Belgium. He retired in 1958, but came back in 1969, aged 39, to ride for the CV Cruz. Two years later he won the first British Veterans. Road Championship. In 1972, at 42, he finished second to Pat McQuaid in the Woolmark GP, ahead of Britain.s entire 1972 Olympic road team. He continued to race until 1977 when a head injury ended his road racing career. But for this, writes Dave Orford, he would have been with us.. After a long period of recovery he continued to ride time-trials for some years. He leaves a wife, Olwen, and two sons, Neil and Craig.
