History of Peter Chisman

Peter Chisman, ("Chis") died suddenly on October 23rd 2003 aged 63, in hospital at Sunderland from complications following a successful prostate operation. One of the best British riders of the 1960s, the high point of his UK career was his victory in the 1963 Milk Race, when he took the Yellow Jersey on the first stage and held his lead to the end, averaging 24 mph for the 1, 354 miles.
Chis's career began when, as a 14-year-old on a borrowed bike, he won a cyclo-cross at Durham against older riders. Inspired, he joined the Houghton CC. 10 years later he was one of the country.s top amateurs, riding frequently in Great Britain teams behind the Iron Curtain, in the World Championships, and several times in the Tour de l.Avenir. In 1966 he turned professional for Raleigh BMB and in 1967 rode in the Tour de France.
He retired from cycling in 1971 and worked as a civil engineer in the north-east until his retirement in 2000. He continued riding in the same old cycling gear, clocking up 100 - 180 miles daily on some rides.
Only eight weeks before his death he rode 130 miles from Sunderland to Edinburgh in 8 hours tovisit his Grandchildren.
He leaves wife Vera, daughter Catherine, son Mickey, and grandchildren Jack and Katie.
At his funeral on October 30th friend and fellow cyclist Dave Thornton said: "We have come to pay our respects to a champion, but .... a modest champion, a quiet unassuming sportsman in the true sense of the word, a true gentleman who was universally respected and liked. Peter will be remembered around the table in our favourite tea-stops, as he was last Sunday, and he will be with us in spirit in the high hills, where he battled it out with the best."
